Smith Greenhouse

Worth visiting!

When I was little  — 2 years ago

When I was little, I would wander around the greenhouse being chased by Roger the guy who ran it. He was ever suspicious that I was picking the flowers. I never did. I did, however, catch frogs in the pond.

This is a nice place to visit, especially in the winter when you’ve forgotten how green smells. The bulb show is also nice, but always crowded and chaotic.

Nice memory!

When was the last time you enjoyed a visit to a greenhouse?

greenhousing

I was last in the smith greenhouse about two years ago while visiting my family who still live in Northampton. I’ve walked by a few times more recently but didn’t have the chance to go in.

I always liked the tree fern and the sensitive plants that they grew in the little area with seedlings.

"greenhousing"

Great name for something that as far as I know, doesn’t have a name!

I’ve “greenhoused” before and always enjoyed the immediate sensory impact upon walking in. It’s like taking an instant vacation to a different climate. The sea of green punctuated with masses of colour. The scent, heady or subtle depending on the crop, and always with a healthy green overtone, and an earthy, peaty undertone, too. The air, warm and heavy with moisture. The plants hushing sound.

There’s always a time-shift too, because you’ll find spring plants in winter, Christmas plants in the fall …

Thanks for the inspiration. I’ll have to go greenhousing again soon.

Cheers
