A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

Porto is a great short break away from the madding crowds and to date, it doesnt appear to have been spoilt or overrun by tourists – even at Easter time.
What does it have to offer? great port, a great waterfront hub of activity abuzz with busy restaurants serving traditional portugese dishes and the freshest of seafood. But be careful – everything is saturated in salt – to the point of destroying the true flavour of the food!
Long walks and picture postcard views surround you. The Douro beats every heart and it will capture yours like it did mine!

...was in 1996. I used to live close to Oporto for 2 years and really liked it.

I arrived in Porto in the early AM, got off my train, and went to buy a ticket to continue on to Santiago de Compestella. Unfortunately the train didn’t run that day, and as people were waiting for me in Santiago, I had to press on. After leaving the station and wandering for quite some time, I happened upon what I thought was a travel agency, found someone who just happened to speak some english, and bought a bus ticket. The next challenge was finding an internet cafe to let my friends know when I would arrive. Things could have worked out much more unfavorably, but flying by the seat of your pants is half the fun.

Rushing out of the metro, BUM! fireworks and tons of people with a plastic hammer in their hands. BOING BOING in everyone´s head…the way to meet people in this crazy party.

Porto is not a big city… in fact you can see it in a couple of days. It’s cold and rainy in the winter, and bright in the Summer.

But it’s people, food, and old imponent buildings, together with some parks and a view to the river making love with the atlantic ocean is something that you just can’t miss.

You can also try the Porto wine, eat “Francesinhas” (a kind of french toast only made in the Porto region), and enjoy the nightlife.

I spent most of the time sick in bed. However, I hired a guide with car for a days touring around the wine region. Definitely worth it for a short trip.
