The first time I went to this place  — 4 weeks ago

i remember the first (and only) time i had ever been here was when i was about 6. i was way too young to do most of the caves but there was one my family could do all together. it was called something like slot cave. i just remember it started with an s. but it was the hardest hike i had ever done at that age. the temperature was 111 degrees! and we were spiralling up this big mountain. it was the worst one and a half mile hike i had ever been on. but the cave was very cool inside and there was so many formations it was amazing.

Does anyone else think that the bat poop smells like grits?! Haha. I went when I was 12 and that is the smell that comes to mind when I think about the caverns. I loved seeing the bats and the stalagmites/stalactites. I hope to go back as an adult to truly savor the beauty of the caves.

A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

Pack a tripod for your camera; then set your camera to NIGHT mode and capture the MOST amazing photos of these amazing caverns.

Also, go off season. I don’t care if it’s 40 below outside, inside the caverns it is always the same temp. Then you can enjoy the quiet of the caverns and take pics at your liesure.

Very nice place. We recommend particularly the tour that goes to the four rooms (King’s Palace, Queen’s Chamber, Pappoose, Green Lake Room?). The Big Room, Elevator, and Natural Entrance are all great for kids.

Both the view from the visitors center (flat as far as the eye can see) and the darkness of the cave are enough to make me return.

Having been there twice, and heard different stories from my Aunt (who is now a retired docent from the Caverns) I felt I got a special glimpse of not only the cave throughout the years and prior to a “vistors center” but behind the scenes knowledge.
