A place to help you rearrange your priorities in life  — 5 months ago

    Worth visiting!

I went to this place in April 2007 when the air was just right. It wasn’t too hot nor too cold. And driving up the curvy roads up to the hills at 7am when it was still misty and no one in sight took me to a different world.

It was just amazing to see how those monks live in solitary and keeping in touch with their inner self and choose to live a different way of living when most people are caught in the game called ‘getting richer faster’.

At times when I drove home from work at 11pm, I pictured myself living in meteora (not in the monastry) for a month just to help me rearrange my priorities.

This is one of those places you need to see to fully appreciate. Unless you do, it doesn’t fully strike you how hard it must have been transport all the building material up those pinnacles to the top, let alone to construct the monasteries once they had. Even without the monasteries, the rock formations alone are worth the trip. A true confluence of man-made and natural wonders.

This was one of my favorite places in Greece, I found it very inspirational. the views are really breathtaking being so high up, and also considering the history its really nice! worth seeing at least once in a lifetime!

I found it hard to believe my own eyes.

Don’t stick to the trails; there are lots of informal paths that wind among the rocks and you can just wander out there for hours, lay back and sun yourself on some rocks… wonderful.

The rock formations are intriguing in themselves, and the monasteries are fascinating—especially the paintings of a gazillion and one ways a martyr can die. While hiking up to the monasteries, you can almost taste the cleanness of the air. But for me, it’s the sum experience of drinking homemade retsina (pine resin-tinged wine), watching the taverna owner grill my dinner in the fireplace, and being welcomed by strangers in a funeral celebration. The sunsets in Meteora are so intensely fiery, I can still see it.

You’ll get a great workout climbing the steps up to the churches on top of those ginormous rock thingies. You can’t take a bad picture of this place.
