A review of this place: CBGB's was living music history, now sadly dunzo :(  — 10 months ago

    Not worth it!

Saw a show here in the early 90’s. It was neat and all, but just made me wish I could have seen some shows there in ‘77: Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell, and the Ramones! So sad it’s gone. They sure sold a lot of f-ing T-shirts though, and still do! Not enough to keep the place open. Tragic. p.s. The only reason I checked “Not worth visiting” is because there’s no longer anything TO visit now, except a revoltingly trendy and expensive John Varvatos boutique. Viva CBGB’s!

    Worth visiting!

In 2005, a dispute between CBGB and the Bowery Resident’s Committee began. The Committee billed Kristal $91,000 in back rent, while Kristal claimed he had not been informed of increases in his $19,000 monthly rent. After the lease expired, they reached an agreement for the club to remain for fourteen more months while Kristal dropped his legal battles and his attempts to get historic landmark status for the club.

CBGB (Country, Blue Grass, and Blues) was a legendary music club located at 315 Bowery at Bleecker Street in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, New York, United States. Founded by Hilly Kristal in 1973, it was originally intended to feature its namesake musical styles, but became legendary as a forum for American punk and punk-influenced bands like The Ramones, Television, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, Blondie, and Talking Heads.

The last time I went to this place  — 2 years ago

I regret not visiting inside before it closed. This place is basically my next door neighbor and it was crowded every night I passed by it.

    Worth visiting!

oddly enough, tho i live right outside NYC, this was only like my 2nd visit (and im being charitable here, and counting the 6th grade visit to the statue of liberty::sigh::)
first thing i noticed? its SMALL.
    DARK.
there’s not a straight line in the place…the floors buckle and dip like frozen ocean waves…makes for interesting footing after massive alchohol consumption, lemme tell you….theres stickers an graffitti everywhere, a visual cacophony of colour, image, texture, and words…a bit overwhelming, but then, i am easily overwhelmed…the sense of history is huge…the ramones played here….and you can almost see them if you tip your head sideways and squint a little….
the gallery next door was a bit too…umm…classy? in comparison, but the suicide girls pics on display were worth seeing…old retro pinup style type stuff…
about the only complaint i had/have was…well….EVERYTHING was expensive.
    ::shrugs::
    but then….
    its NYC.
and they ARE trying to “save” CB’s..

Why I recommend this place to locals  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

it’s my favorite venue to see my friends’ bands play. So many rad bands have played CBs in the past, it’s amazing to see people you know on the stage. iF your friends ever play a show there, check it out! or if a band you like is there definitely check it out. ESPECIALLY since CBs is closing soon…definitely stop by and see how awesome it is before they tear it down :[

CBGB’s is my dream place to go.
I’ve always wanted to go there.
    I mean, why not?
All the good bands started there..

I stayed at a loft around the corner on Prince. Had to take a walk over. What a shame, ooooh the things that went on in there! This was right after Joey died, there were all sorts of wreaths and stuff stacked up outside.
