Summer Solstice  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

My husband and I were on a road trip of the Four Corners area and we were supposed to meet up with our archaeoastronomy professor from college at Petrogylph in Albuquerque on the summer solstice to see his research there with the light interactions. We called him from Flagstaff the day before and he suggested that we stop off for the sunrise at Petrified Forest and see a light interaction there….so we did. We wanted to see Petrified Forst anyway and we weren’t on any schedule to speak of. It was really awesome and it’s a good thing that we saw that one because when we got to Albuquerque for sunset we had plenty of time to help Dr. Davis get all of his camera equipment set up to do time lapse photography of all the various interactions there, but clouds rolled in just at sunset and prevented us from actually seeing any of the ones there. Oh and the painted desert is beautiful!

This place was cool! not only were there the petrified trees, but there were petryglphs on rocks and the foundations of old buildings… very interesting.

They brought me here when I was just a little girl! This was one of the best trips of my childhood! EXCEPT when we found out I was allergic to fresh water fish! :)

I will always remember how HUGE the painted desert was and the best part of the trip…cracking open my own geod! I still have it!

    thank you Grandma and Grandpa!

This is a great National Park. Lots of info on how the giant trees came to be petrified in the first place. Neat film in the visitor’s centre and more to see than you might think. Leave several hours for the drive. Also, stop in at the gas station/cafe at the start of the trip. Great place to buy Route 66 stuff and good road food. A fun thing to do.

It was just a National Monument back then. I think my brother and my Grandfather stole some petrified wood.

Long time since I’ve been to the Petrified Forest. Pretty cool to see large “stumps” that were pure stone. Bring back the pterodactyl
