Heading hwest out of Kathmandu by completing a 6 ½ hour drive (200 km) or an hour plane ride in the Pokhara Valley is the city of Pokhara. Known as the “city of 7 lakes” it brings you even closer to the Himalayas than in Kathmandu.

Pokhara second largest city in Nepal and can be considered a ‘holiday resort’; as it is one of the main centres where people can access the mountains. Only 30km away you can start climbing the first peak. There are wonderful views of all around the city of the Annapurna ranges within a sub-tropical setting.

Why I want to go to this place  — 1 year ago

I know no mountains, yet i appreciate their simplicity.
I chose Pokhara in Nepal since i understand that this place must
be one of the doors to graceful solitude, – and to heartwarming sunshines.
I would like to take longs walks, hike and talk to locals.
Bhutan, tucked away in Himalayas, would be my next road to take.

Beautiful place, been there many times… A few years ago I went on from Pokhara to Jomsom and then to Muktinath. Enjoyed a wonderful few days trekking all by myself and yet oh so happy – surrounded only by the spectacular Himalayan landscapes. Throughout my life, I am sure that somewhere in my heart I will continue to hear the call of the Himalayas!

I went the Pokhara more than 15 years ago and did a short trek around the hills in the Annapurna area. I remember the constant views of the “fish tail” mountain, and good people we met on the way. Its a beautiful place. The aircraft ride was exciting, the airhostess wore a sari and stillettos and handed us all boiled lollies after take off. A very elderly woman mediated with her prayer wheel for the duration of the flight.

Even better than Kathmandu  — 3 years ago

If you’re going to go to Nepal, see Kathmandu (stay in Thamel area), see the Himalayas, and then get down to the best city in the country, Pokhara. Pokhara is located on the edge of a lake (I spent an entire day canoeing on it once) at the edge of the Annapurna mountains. The beauty is breathtaking, the weather is warm, the fruits are tropial. So laid back and wonderful. Go hiking, canoe, ride bikes, take a kayaking trip…
